Who we are

Shea-Cahir Consulting was founded by Ian Shea-Cahir, a communications professional with 20 years of  experience in social media, strategic communications and journalism.

After working at major newspapers in California and Kansas, Ian has become a national expert on social media by understanding one simple point: Social media is, at its core, no different that other forms of marketing or strategic communications.

Ian began working in what we now call social media while working at The Sacramento Bee, managing the newspaper’s entertainment site, sacticket.com. Using the engagement tools of the time – liveblogs, forums and early podcasts – helped the secondary site build its own brand, and sacticket’s unique traffic increased by 50% year over year during his time in charge.

After leaving newspapers in 2006, Ian began using social media for marketing and sales while working at the University of Kansas. As online manager for the university’s performing arts center, he began using Facebook engagement and advertising, learning the language of multiple targeted demographics and working on a ground-breaking shared marketing campaign with Apple and iTunes. Later, as communications coordinator for the KU School of Engineering, Ian honed his skills in brand management, using social media to build engagement with current and potential students, and to give the school a voice that both worked within the KU structure and helped to make the school stand out from the crowd.

As social media strategist for Princeton University, Ian was the voice of Princeton on all social platforms, overseeing more than 250 social media accounts around campus and running a campus group of about 100 people who “do” social media. He spoke at communications conferences around the Northeast, and he wrote award-winning strategy and policy documents that helped the university outpace its peers in both audience growth and engagement.

After moving back to the Kansas City area, Ian became the social media manager for the financial services company Waddell & Reed and Ivy Funds. It was there that he faced his greatest challenge: Fitting the social media world into the highly regulated and conservative financial industry. He led a project team to begin a pilot program for financial advisors and field leadership on LinkedIn. He wrote policies, and he helped the pilot participants learn not only how to use social media in a compliant fashion, but how to begin to build their presence and their voice. Most firms have been content to give their advisors basic access, but that wasn’t good enough. If people are going to use social media, they should get the most out of it.

Communications is in Ian’s blood. He’s been a wedding DJ, a bank teller and worked at the family bridal shop. His Nana tailored her age, her hearing and her ability to speak English based on the customer in her shop. It was through watching her that he learned how to adjust the marketing voice for each customer.
